A secret destination for the last 50 years, the region around the coastal village of Comporta has finally been discovered. Together with the village of Melides, which lies a bit further south, it has been named destination of the year by important travel magazines such as the Condé Nast Traveller and the National Geographic Traveller. We are not sure which outcome this sudden fame will have, but the area is still well worth a visit for its authenticity, beautiful landscapes and unbelievably untouched sandy beaches with turquoise waters. You can choose between beautifully designed boutique hotels nestled in vast pine forests or at the edge of bright green rice fields or a more laid-back country guest house or luxury villa in the hills above Melides. Just half an hour up the river Sado stay in a stylish apartment on the charming town of Alcácer do Sal.
