Comporta, on the western coast of the Portuguese region of Alentejo had been a carefully guarded secret over the last few decades, when just a few insiders and jetsetters knew about it. The wild and mostly untouched landscape, the endless sandy beaches, the lush green rice fields and little fishermen’s villages have recently come to the attention of the rest of the world. Still intact, it is definitely time to pay it a visit before it changes too much.
There are no large resorts or hotels in the area (yet). Comporta – half nature refuge, half hip destination
The small towns of Comporta an Carvalhal are known for their 50 km long, beautiful and almost untouched beaches (Europe’s longest) spreading from the Troia peninsula all way down to Sines. Comporta is located on the southern shores of the Sado estuary with its green rice fields and endless pine forests, close to the natural park “Reserva Natural do Estuário do Sado“, where you can come to observe the wild dolphins. It is home to the famous “cabanas”, restored former fisherman’s cottages built with straw, luxury holiday-rentals and boutique hotels.
Beaches and restaurants in Comporta
Best beaches in Comporta and Carvalhal:
Praia do Pêgo e Praia do Carvalhal – Carvalhal:
A “chic” beach with a bit more people during high season. The restaurants “Sal”, “O Dinis” and the “Sublime Beach Bar” on the beach, are quite expensive. The bars are a bit less expensive and have good music.
Praia da Comporta – Comporta - same as Praia do Pêgo
Praia da Aberta Nova:
This beach is a relatively empty beach a few kilometres north of Melides. There is a small bar. The ocean is a bit wilder than in the beaches of Comporta and Carvalhal.
Praia da Vigia:
This beach is almost always empty and lies on the northern margin of the Melides lagoon. You will have to walk the last 300 meters to the beach. There is no bar, so bring a picnic basket.

Fish dishes, meat and Alentejano dishes. Simple, but very good. Nice terrace.
Ti Lena – in the village of “Deixa o Resto”:
Best meat in the region (entrecote from Galicia). Good gin bar and relaxing location. The entrecôte costs around 27,00 € but is more than enough for 2 persons.
A Talha – Grândola:
Very good. Traditional Alentejan cuisine. A bit more pricey.
Casa de Pasto – Grândola:
Simple and very good. Traditional Alentejan cuisine. Moderate prices.
