What can one say about Matera? Well, it’s a magical place and is officially recognised as such, having been awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO for its unique stone dwellings known as Sassi - houses literally carved out of rocks - and wonderfully kept town centre.
You will find the Hotel in Pietra right in the heart of Matera and true to form emanates the spirit of the town.
Conceived as a boutique hotel, it manages to be exclusive, elegant and atmospheric (goodness is it atmospheric) and historic, as it is part of a 14th century structure. All 4 rooms and 4 suites have been carved out of the natural rocky formations and blend seamlessly with all the other common areas, such as the reading room, Zen Room, cellar and large hall.
In fact, all rooms still have their primary typical characteristics as showed by details like the old stone staircase in the "suite with terrace" once used to reach the church tower and now used to reach a panoramic terrace, or the "manger" once used to store corn and feed the animals. In the "suite with tub", a small steel staircase take to an exclusive "cistern" wine cellar once used to collect rain-water.
It gives “solid as a rock” a whole new meaning.

Incredible location

We stayed at L’ Hotel in Pietra and could not have anticipated the most wonderful location. The detail to the room was incredible - a cave made into our bedroom and bathroom. So atmospheric and amazing to stay in - be it more luxuriously, but experiencing a little of the past. Thank you L’ Hotel in Pietra. breakfast was fab, suggestions for dinner great and places to visit - loved the Dali sculptures.

My friend and I stayed here for two nights at the end of August and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the hotel. We reserved a space for our car at a nearby garage and had a porter help us with our luggage to the hotel which was about 5 min walk away. The location was perfect with incredible views over the Sassi from our room. The room itself was stunning. I guess my only criticism would be that as two friends we wanted single beds and the room was on split level with a huge king bed upstairs with another seating area and the window with those views, and downstairs was a sitting room area which was darker and I drew the short straw to have to sleep on the sofa bed. I'm not sure why hotels don't make double beds up with two single beds so they can be more flexible with whatever guests they have. But if you are a couple then certainly the room we had (1004) would be perfect and pretty romantic :) The bathroom was huge - double sink/mirror, huge shower and bath too. Absolutely stunning. The breakfast was great - selection of fruits, yoghurts, rolls/sandwiches and cakes. Staff were always super helpful and knowledgeable as well as incredibly friendly. Superb. Definitely planning on going back to Matera - it's such a special place, and know where I will be staying...
