Those looking to come face to face with rural customs will find the region of Lamego and the Casa de Santo Antonio de Britiande an excellent choice. It is an unhurried sort of place where tradition still plays an important role in local life. The lovely 17th Casa de Santo Antonio de Britiande, the grandest house of the village of Britiande, is no exception to this rule.
Despite being relatively near to a main road the atmosphere is still one of a rural idyll, encompassed as it is by 11/2 hectares of beautifully kept gardens replete with cherry and pear trees. Indeed, the orchard in full bloom during April/May and September/October is a sight for sore eyes. The grounds also have a swimming pool and patio with a pergola tree where breakfast is served during the summer months.
Antonio and Ana Pinto Ribeiro, the hospitable hosts, do everything possible to make guests as comfortable as possible. The number of rooms has been kept deliberately low in order to maintain authenticity and the personal touch as much as possible. The two studios in the garden with separate access offer great luxury: TV, fridge, minibar and even a microwave.
The adornment certainly helps in this regard, with traditional Portuguese decor and furnishings - such as the panel on one of the walls describing the evolution of the Portuguese Monarchy - being the order of the day. The delightful 17th century chapel, with its tiles and carved wood ceiling, is also an integral part of the house and not to be missed.
Attractions nearby include the pretty town of Lamego, which boasts one of the loveliest Baroque structures in Iberia, if not the whole of Europe – the Shrine to Our Lady of Remédios with its famous staircase.

Good To Know about Casa de Santo António de Britiande
Our 5 night stay at Casa de San António was the highlight of our trip. It is perfectly situated to explore the Douro Region, and so lovely a place to just stay and relax. Ana Marie was delightful, hospitable, and happy to share her knowledge of the region.
Casa San António is a hotel, and a beautiful historic home. The history, beauty and quiet sophistication of the surroundings and gardens allow one to feel immersed, having a truly authentic experience. Deliciously prepared meals using herbs from the garden and estate wine and olive oil, every detail has been carefully thought through.
This is a hotel for quiet, independent travelers, who care about history, appreciate the details of estate farm to table living, and have respect for the people and culture they are moving through, as there is so much to appreciate, experience and learn here.
This a memorable place to land.

My husband and I stayed here on our way to Lisbon. The accommodation was excellent. Everyone went out of there way to make our stay very comfortable. The property is just lovely. Decorated with beautiful Portuguese furnishings with a French flare. The breakfast was fabulous. Full breakfast fresh everything! The croissants were amazing! The location was just perfect right near Lamego but on a quite road not far from the motorway. We would highly recommend this property. Can’t wait to return. Kind Regards, Linda
Charmante Unterkunft

This property has a gorgeous garden, pool, and orchard where we picked cherries, raspberries, and more! The house itself dates from the 1600's. Our room was lovely, large, with a great bathroom. The people who work there are so kind, and the breakfast was delicious, fresh, great quality! A very peaceful place to relax with good access to Douro and the surrounding areas.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the wonderful Casa de Santo Antonio de Britiande for a few days in June while on a road trip through Portugal, stopping in the Douro Valley wine region. I can honestly say that this Bed & Breakfast is probably the most ideal place to stay in Douro, for many reasons. First, location: It is within close driving distance (25 min) to major Quintas like Quinta Nova and Quinta da Pacheca where we could enjoy lovely scenic afternoon wine tastings and romantic dinners and lunches in their restaurants. It is also close to the Six Senses Douro resort which is a nice place to go if you're looking to have an upscale dining experience or scenic drinks. Historic monuments, churches and monasteries are also conveniently close by for visits. The Bed & Breakfast itself is rich with history, as it used to be a monastary and was later converted into an estate that has been in the current owner's family for many generations. The two B&B owners are some of the loveliest people we met on our travels. The married couple is extremely classy with impeccable taste, and they take very good care of the Casa -- it is apparent that they pay close attention to small details. Everything was very clean. The breakfast was lovely, which included: homemade yogurt, fresh raspberries and cherries picked from the Casa's own gardens, eggs, cheese, ham, fresh breads and cereals, and of course coffee. The land and gardens surrounding the Casa is lush and beautifully maintained. The pool looks out onto the Douro mountains and there is a view of a very old, beautiful chapel nearby. It was not crowded at all -- we were essentially the only guests there, which made for a wonderfully intimate experience. Staff is respectful of space and privacy. The only time we would hear a peep from the owners was in the late afternoon when she -- reading our minds -- would come to the pool and offer us a glass of wine and a snack. We highly recommend the Casa de Santo Antonio de Britiande for anyone traveling through the Douro region who seeks and appreciates history, simplicity and authenticity in their travels.
