Ty Mad is a charming hotel in Douarnenez – a renowned Breton sea port – that dates back to the twenties when celebrities such as Picasso, Breton and, especially, Max Jacob were frequent visitors. It features 17 bedrooms – 11 of which facing the sea over the beach of Saint-Jean.
This is an eclectic and artistic hotel (painters and sculptors exhibit here) with a quaint mixture of furniture that includes items that are handmade, contemporary and even Chinese. Ideal for organized thematic groups on subjects such as painting, photography or nautical sports. It’s a quiet place where, as Jacob used to say “one wakes up with the singing of birds”. The dining room is simply delightful and apart from serving splendid “gourmand" breakfasts by a sunny bay window, dinners are prepared every day with fish freshly bought at the harbour – except Sundays when it’s “curry day”.
The owners, Arnaud and Armelle Raillard, have converted this old presbytery into something really special. Besides sailing and other seaside sports, tennis and horse riding can be practiced within the vicinity. We are at the fringe of Douarnenez, therefore we can always explore this fishing village of 20,000 inhabitants that boasts sardine and herring canneries – something slightly unusual. There are a several small restaurants serving the best seafood in France.
Ty Mad is a marvellous place to stay - a beachfront hotel with a singular contemporary charm within a fantastic environment.
Unser Aufenthalt im Ty Mad hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Das Hotel ist geschmackvoll eingerichtet und sehr sauber. Die Mitarbeiter/innen im Restaurant sind höflich und kompetent.

Very charming little hotel with enchanting garden and fine restaurant. Excellent cuisine.
The room design is very tasteful, a wonderful atmosphere, like a day by the sea.
There is a small bay within walking distance.
Very friendly staff. We felt very comfortable even though we had the smallest room there.

Sehr charmantes kleines Hotel. Super Lage. Ganz ruhig und trotzdem zentral. Kleiner Strand gleich um die Ecke. Freundlicher Service. Kleines, liebevolles Frühstück., allerdings jeden Tag das Gleiche. Gutes Restaurant im Wintergarten.

We stayed 3 nights in this beautiful hotel and can only recommend this place. The house and rooms (we had two different) are beautiful, the restaurant offers excellent food and drinks (if you at the hotel, dinner is a must do), the staff is professional & super friendly without any exception. I was also impressed that they keep everything plastic free.
You can book a massage at the hotel which we did on a rainy day and the massage was very good too.
Merci beaucoup

We stayed 11 nights at the hotel. Everything was as described. The Hotel has a great atmosphere and the staff is very nice and accommodating. We loved it and will definitely come back. For a longer stay, we would next time choose a bigger room with ocean view, even though it is more expensive. Being close to the beach and close to restaurants was great, too. Even though the best restaurant is right on site ????

Top site. Excellent service in a very nice old building. Everything very clean and well kept. Superb breakfast. The city of Douarnenez is not very charming. The hotel's immediate quarter, however, is nice. You need a car to get from there to Bretagne's beautiful places.

Brilliant - one of the best places ever ! The hotel is really nice, excellent rooms, wonderful dining area, lovely garden. The location is excellent, 50m to one beach, 200m to a park with picnic tables, and option to stroll to the harbor. Dinner was superb, wonderful food, excellent service. Whole heartedly recommend, one of the few places I would go back to.

Beautiful, charming little Hotel.
Very friendly hosts.
Not easy to find and to get parking places.
Good breakfast, but prizey.
Dinner too exclusive on the healthy and ecological side and very pricey.

Good hotel with some very interesting decor and art.
Clean and well kept throughout.
Owner and staff always in attendance.
Good quality good.
Car parking request carefully accommodated.
However our bathroom was very cramped and had no mirror above the wash hand basin thus making wet shaving and applying make up a real difficulty. The mirror was on an adjacent wall 1.50M away and at 90 degrees.
We would return but ask for a bathroom with a sensibly sited mirror.

(Sommer)

Good location, nice old building. although odd. rooms a bit small and felt more like a posh travel lodge than somewhere special. expensive for what it was

what a gem this is... Due to our passion for sailing little boats nationally and internationally we have visited many beautiful places indeed. But what a delight to come across Douarnenez, it's beautiful surroundings, fabulous seafood and..Ty Mad!
The photos and description on this site are absolutely accurate and once there in person, we were welcomed by incredibly charming hosts. Ty Mad is a family run patinated Boutique Hotel, with it's signature being -apart from the top location- the imagination and tasteful creativity used throughout.
The hosts were very welcoming and accommodating and such a pleasure to have met. The meals were all prepared fresh and were delicious. I am writing this review with ease and joy and am happy to recommend Ty Mad to everybody who is looking for a treat! Thumbs up Ty Mad!
- not recommended to travelers who look for the "beige" uniformity in a hotel.
