Muxima - Montes Ferreiros

Now Muxima is an interesting word. Is it Portuguese? No. Is it Spanish? No. Then perhaps it’s Latin? The answer is still no. In fact, it means “heart” in the Kimbundu dialect of Angola. A name that is much justified in this case as both Africa and this whole place is very close to the heart of Sofia and Jorge, the charming owners.

Their idea was to build a space in this beautiful part of Southern Portugal that was anything but ordinary or conventional, as well as have a close spiritual connection to Africa. Sofia and Jorge have a deep affection for this continent, having worked and travelled there on many occasions, but being widely travelled they have also taken inspiration from other exotic lands, and the end result of their dreams is the utterly impressive Muxima.

It really is an amalgam of various exotic places with an African heart, as even the names of the rooms will testify - Krabi, Micondó, Mangalore, Coba, Chaouen, for example – and all objects have a meaning, blankets from Mexico, lanterns from Morocco, textiles from India, earthy coloured “tadelakt” in the bathrooms as well as the back to basics approach – some will call it minimalist – of doing the simple things really well. So the little pleasures such as the warm glow of the light as night falls, delicious breakfast served with homemade bread and the intense earth colours in and around the Muxima make for a special stay.
