Portugal is serious surf country; it’s location by the Atlantic's edge and some 900 km of coastline, sandy beaches and coves making it an open play ground paradise for surfers.

Wherever you are, north, south or centre - even in the most crowded places - you’ll soon find an outstanding bit of coastline to test your surfing skills. And some of them are truly superlative.

Ericeira, for example, some 50 km northwest of Lisbon, is an official “World Surfing Reserve” the equivalent of a UNESCO World heritage site for surfing.

Basically, it is made up of 8km of spectacular coast with a “high density of outstanding surf breaks including iconic breaks such as Ribeira d’Ilhas and Coxos, among others”.

The world record for surfing the biggest wave was actually broken in Praia do Norte, Nazare, again just north of Lisbon, in November 2011 by Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara. "Everything was perfect” he said “The weather, the waves." The size of the wave? Over 27 metres!
