Orense Dicas

Ourense, the spa city

Imagine taking a dip in a large open-air thermal bath, by day or night, any time of year, in water with a temperature of over 40 degrees centigrade, and right beside the Miño river. All this can be experienced in Ourense, a city with a hidden underground ocean with five spa areas to enjoy for free, and where you can even see the mineral and medicinal waters bubbling out of the rock. A total privilege for your health and wellbeing. You can also visit private Japanese-style spa centres (like Zen temples) and relax with seaweed- and chocolate-based beauty treatments. And to make it even more convenient, you can also explore this area (a circuit of about four kilometres) by taking the Spa Train. And right in the historic centre, make time for a visit to the Fuente de las Burgas spring, where mineral and medicinal waters bubble up to the surface at a temperature of 67 degrees centigrade, and where the ancient Romans dedicated an altar to the water nymphs.

Ribeira Sacra, Land Of Monasteries

Welcome to the Ribeira Sacra, an area in inland Galicia wich is home to spectacular natural features such as the canyon of the Sil river –the mark of identity of the region- an a valuable artistic heritage. Here you´ll find a dozen medieval monasteries to remind you of this region´s importance in the Middle Ages. A genuine journey back through history.rnThe Sil River forms a natural boundary between the provinces of Ourense and Lugo, in the heart of the region of Galicia. You´ll marvel at its rugged, landscapes, dominated by vineyards, mountains and the waters of the Sil River where it joins the Miño River (just 25 kilometres from Pazo de Bentraces).

This section of the river is home the Ribeira Sacra, an area of churches and shrines, mostly in the Romanesque style, as well as palaces and monasteries. We recommended you leave around four days to explore the region. Did you know that this is home to Spain´s oldest Christian parishes? 1,500 years ago, congregation of monks and hermits settled here, and for centuries devoted themselves to meditation and reflection. This peace and harmony lives on this day in the region´s village and monasteries. Some are now abandoned, but are well worth visiting as their walls have been witness to the passing of time. The damp, moss and vegetation impart an air of mystery.rnThey are reached by means of forest tracks and country roads running through lush forests. Of particular note is the monastery at San Esteban, the largest in the Ribeira Sacra, located to the north of the village of Nogueira de Ramuín. In the same village you´ll find the monastey of Santa Cristina, where you can stroll around its cloister and surroundings and soak up the magical atmosphere. Get your camera ready because very close by are some of the region´s most famous viewing points: the Balcones de Madrid. From this natural terrace you can see the inmensity of the Sil River canyon, with gorges up to 500 metres deep. The views are spectacular. Once here we recommend an atractive excursion. Exploring this section of the river (40 navigable kilometres) by catamaran. There are routes of differing durations. The longest, takes approximately three hours, 24 kilometres downstream, and can be done at any time of the year, but there are also shorter routes.
