The Almazara de Valdeverdeja is a pretty stylish resort located in the heart of what is known as the “Castles” and “Conquistadores” Routes, because… this is the land of castles and conquistadores, in fact, the very word of this region "Castille" is derived from castle.

Many of its inhabitants left for the new world in the 15th and 16th centuries and the great number of fortifications is a testament to its importance in the forging of Spain as we know it, whether by war or diplomacy. Nowadays, though, the philosophy of conquest has been superseded by the philosophy of hospitality, as is the case with this particular hotel.

A former oil mill (its name means the “oil press of Valdevedreja”), it retains many original features with the added bonus of six double rooms, one suite and a large common area surrounded the typical Castilian courtyard. Plus 12 villas scattered throughout the property with large interior spaces, some of which with Jacuzzis in the bedroom, but all with private terraces and isolated from each other. The hotel has several gardens, swimming pools, restaurant and beauty and wellness services. Plus the old mill doubles as a regional arts centre with items for sale. It even boasts a course in soap making! In effect, you can spend all your time here, but though that is very agreeable in itself, it would be a shame to miss out what the wider area as a whole has to offer. Remember those castles! Oropesa, some 15 km away, has the best preserved castle in Spain whilst Valdervedeja itself is at the centre of a triangle consisting of Toledo, probably the finest Spanish medieval city, Trujillo, the cradle of the Spanish conquistadores, and Caceres, a world heritage city. Did we say triangle? perhaps we should say pentagon, for other fantastic places to visit nearby include Merida and Plasencia.

To make a stay here even more fun, within the vicinity you can practice horseback riding, golf and adventure sports. If you come at the right time of the year, there are even medieval shows to enjoy within the walls of Oropesa castle itself. You may not have the sea or beaches, but you pretty much have everything else here. All villas are independent with large rooms. They take in a number of rustic villas, two “Zen” Villas, One “Baldaquino” and three “Metro” Villas. Rustic Built in clay with a large round Jacuzzi. Large plasma TV and hydro massage. Zen Covered terrace incorporating a “Zen Bath”, ambient music and Jacuzzi. Metro Large rooms, boasts a Jacuzzi and a private terrace. Baldaquino Similar to the Metro, though a bit more intimate and boasts a hydro massage. Also has a private terrace.
