Choupana Hills
Hotel Type: Luxury Hotel
Environment: Island
Number of Rooms: 62
Style: Design
Chic and trendy hotel overlooking Funchal Madeira is often thought of as a destination catering to the older, more established, visitor, so it comes as a breath of fresh air to have a hotel such as the Choupana Hills, bringing a chic designer atmosphere (some would call it boutique style) to the island.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise for the men behind the Choupana Hills are no other than Michel de Camaret (main architect) and Didier Lefor (principal interior designer). Their stamp is all over the place, with 34 Bungalow style units built on pillars and beautifully designed on the back of African and Oriental influences, but still managing to take in an eclectic mix of antiques and furnishings.
Much thought has gone into every detail, even the beds slide apart if required and there is something for everyone to enjoy here - contemporary mixing with the old, east with the west. A word must also go to the location, which is fantastic, nestling as it does on the green hills of Funchal overlooking the bay of this historic town. Do also try the Xôpona restaurant, which in the spirit of the hotel itself, serves up an exotic and eclectic selection of dishes.
Two heated swimming pools and Health Spa add to the luxury. Stylish and not short of substance.
