Well, the French sure know a thing or two about how to do stately home elegance. And if there was ever a French capital of stately homes the Loire Valley would be a prime contender. It has some of the best. The Le Manoir de Contres is a magnificent example of what we are talking about.

This early 18^th century Manor House exhibits all the classic architectural attributes of a French “chateau” and is encompassed within a 2 and ½ acres private park. You want peace, you've got it especially as despite its grand size it only has nine rooms, one of which can accommodate wheel chairs.

Yet unlike many other historic accommodations in France and beyond, this particular jewel is not stuffy or rests on its historic laurels. Rooms may be huge but they are infused with light, modern touches (see pictures of rooms). Indeed, colours are many. They range from purple, to orange and blue, even taking green and mauve. A kaleidoscope of bright hues not usually associated with historic places.

And the “piece de la resistance”, as it were, is that France may no longer have a monarchy, guests here are still treated like royalty by the French-German couple who own and run the Manoir de Contres. Add to the mix some absolutely stunning scenery and you have all the right ingredients for one of those really special stays.

Oh, and we almost forgot. The in house restaurant, which serves local delicacies more than does the Manoir de Contres justice. So all in all, a stay here is a feast on the senses Loire Valley style.

Châteaux, vineyards… enjoy our beautiful region!

In the Manoir’s vicinity you can visit many of the famous castles which UNESCO declared as World Heritage : the châteaux Chambord, Amboise and Chenonceaux as well as the Royal Castle of Blois, to name just a few.

Science lovers will want to pay a visit to the Château du Clos Lucet where Leonardo da Vinci lived.

The splendours of royal gardens can be admired in the parks of Chaumont-sur-Loire castle, at the castles of Villandry and of Valençay as well as in Beauregard.

Visit the château de Cheverny and watch the daily feeding of the pack of Harrier hounds that are bred there. Readers of the Tintin books will adore the exhibition of the Hergé Foundation: indeed, the books’ ‘Château de Moulinsart’ was modelled on Cheverny.

Art lovers will want to discover the Musée de l’Objet and its collection of contemporary art, as well as the Museum of Religious Art, both in Blois, nor will they miss the remarkable portrait gallery in Beauregard castle.

To make your visit truly unforgettable take a tour by hot-air balloon or by helicopter over the “Valley of the Kings”: on a fine day an outstanding experience.

Connoisseurs can taste the white, red and rosé wines directly with the regional vine-growers. Dairy farms will let you discover the unique taste of the goat cheeses typical for the Loire Valley. Gourmets will not miss the visit to a chocolate manufacturer in Bracieux to experience true delight.

Discover the river Loire by pedal-boat or canoe. Le local swimming pool in Contres includes a fun bath and a spa. Riding lessons and excursions on horseback are available as well as the access to several tennis courts and a skate board site. In Cheverny (7 km) you will find an 18 hole golf course, and all around Contres marked paths invite you to pedestrian strolls and bike tours.
